Can get buy well without being e-connected. Past couple of tours, have taken a non-smart phone. Last tour had an iPad-mini, not sure why I took it - only connected (wi-fi) a couple of times. I do like to carry a small portable radio. Have a 32 gig chip in my camera, so unless it is stolen or weather ruined - have lots of image capacity. Sometimes I tour to escape the electronic world.
ps. I know some use their e-device to document their tour, I do so with an old fashioned paper journal.

I have no real interest in being online on tour but now that I have one of those iPad things I might bring it on my next tour. Though I probably won't be super focused on being online for much time. I find touring to be a vacation from the real world, a chance to get away from the stuff that bogs us down.

Man, I was in the STICKS Amazon rain forest, Northwestern Bolivia, back in 2007. Talk about middle of nowhere. And right in the middle of this boon dock village I was holed up in, since I needed the local village welder to stick some steel plates to my busted aluminum rack mounts, was a small building with a satellite dish. It was an internet cafe. In. The. Freaking. AMAZON.

I emailed my mom from there.

I use an iPad. I have written a blog post on my approach here. Only change is I have now updated to an iPad Air and will probably now use my HTC One as my hotspot as I am now on Telstra 4G (best coverage in Australia). This saves me using the modem.

That's what every ride is for.

We just got back from a lovely 45 km jaunt in the country ... no phones, no laptops, no i-anything. I did have my little P&S camera, and of course, we had basic odometers on our bicycles, but that's it.

We can experience that escape every weekend.

^ A friend and I are fond of riding ~25mi on a rails-to-trails route to a local campground most weekends. It's gonna be amazing to get out of the "daily grind" for a couple months for our upcoming tour.

Getting disconnected is one of the best parts of touring, imho... I do have a data plan now (haven' toured since getting a "smart" phone) so I might use it for directions or something like that. For the most part, I want my phone to stay out of my hand until the tour is over.

Electronics like everything else are a tool, they also need to be used with moderation. When I am out for a ride the phone goes in my handlebar bag. I will check for messages at a rest stop... maybe. My job requires me to be available pretty much 24/7, however it isn't abused. The only time I get contacted outside of normal work hours is if there is a full blown emergency. I have been using my smart phone for more and more things, and eliminating other gadgets as I go.

I take my netbook and smartphone. Both Samsung. For the most part, both turned off while riding - except for picture taking.

I've only done short tours so far and haven't missed having electronics but on a longer tour I would probably bring a phablet and keyboard to journal. I am just not that good at pen and paper journaling and really need the keyboard. Also, on rest days in hotels I'd like a "do-nothing" part of each day and during that time internet access would be nice. On a longer tour I might also want to watch a movie once in a while and a device would be helpful for that.
