Seriously? You can climb steep passes without sweating? It would have to be pretty cold before I could, even with only a thin layer and a shell with the zipper open. I adjust by opening and closing zippers, but often I find myself climbing one side of a pass in the sun and descending the other in the shade over and over again. I find that for me in those conditions being wet from sweat is a given and I'd rather not have to take layers on and off numerous times per day. I find that wearing synthetics and a shell allows me to cope despite being wet.

Yes I'm in Florida, I'm actually from Minnesota, so Hi Neighbor.

I just find the whole "Death Fabric" absurd. It is more accurate to say that 'being stupid' kills

Yeah, the death fabric is absurd. I was a very early adopter of the polypro underwear, and used to like it a lot. But it got so marketed and over priced that I didn't bother replacing it, and nothing has really changed in my life. I remember skiing once in Algonquin park when it showed -50c on the thermometer. It was a pleasant after dinner stretch. So dry and windless you could feel the electricity on the skis. All I wore was a goretex shell and poly underwear, and knickers, and the rest of it. That is the beauty of poly, it extends the band a single set-up is good for, you could wear that in the summer rain. I could go on that same ski with a cotton T and I would probably end up with a cold patch on my back, or have to vent my shell and the entry point would be cold. But die, are they nuts?

Bike touring is only as "Extreme" as the surroundings, which in most cases reduces it to a blend of being a homeless drifter/bringing home the shopping, you can wear the exact same stuff people doing that do, well maybe jeans aren't the best idea. It can be extreme in the saddle etc... area.
