Injured 5 days before scheduled Tri....DAMMIT

I was so proud of the fact that I was physically ready for a sprint Tri this coming Sunday 9/8 -- I had prostate surgery this past May 31. Went out for my last long ride, this past Wednesday. Guy at a stop sign makes eye contact with me ......and then goes. Too late for me, I tried veering right and his side mirror and my left ribs "became friends."
I was on the main thoroughfare, had the right of way, and I was NOT going fast. Alas, I was going too fast to avoid this dare-I-say idiot.
CAT Scan shows nothing broken, chest is clear. BUT, if I turn the wrong way, cough, deep breath egad the pain is intense. Can't run 2 steps without sharp pain. So, unless I magically wake up tomorrow feeling spiffy I'm out of that Tri. I am really depressed.

Man that sucks.

I picked up some sort of lung infection the week before my first tri in June. I spent the whole week coughing, spluttering, couldn't catch my breath, so I didn't do any physical activity at all the whole week. The day before, I did a short brick session to see if it was worth showing up the next day... and I got through fine. Went out the next day and put in a time 6 minutes faster than I had thought.

Not saying this will work for you, but you'd be surprised at the body's ability to recuperate, and maybe getting the circulation going this evening will help you?

Don't give up! My 55yo friend just finished Ironman Louisville after crashing a few weeks before the event. Adrenaline will help A LOT and so will your desire to finish.

BTW, grew up in Paramus. I have my Ironman Florida in November and lately my shoulder is giving me major fits. Have 4,200+ yards of swimming in the Gulf of Mexico with the bone on bone pain increasing every time I swim but I have to tough it out.

Good luck and let us know the results.

UPDATE # 1: Felt fairly good this afternoon so went for a VERY short run and was able to do it with tolerable pain. So, I will start the Tri tomorrow morning...and hopefully finish. But if I do DNF, I won't have any regrets.
I'll send UPDATE # 2 with the result.

UPDATE # 2: No-go. Got to the race, signed in, set up everything...and after 1 minute (at most) of gentle stretching got a major spasm at the injury site. After a couple more of them I realized this would be impossible so just headed on home. At least I can say I did not DNF, since i didn't even start.

Was hoping for a good event for you but it's just one of those things. Heal up, keep training and good luck with the next one.

UPDATE # 3: Finished a sprint Tri last Saturday 10/19. Very small race, but I had fun (and tho it was close, I didn't finish last!).
