These Columbia bugabootoos seem like they might be pretty good and at $49 seem reasonable. As long as you don't have to spell the product name very often...

I bought a pair of Cabelas Snow Runners and rode with them last winter. I wore them with Cabela's 2mm Neoprene Socks. The combination worked well for me down to temperatures around 10 degrees F. The neoprene sox get clammy when your feet sweat but they are very warm. It appears to me that foot warmth is highly individual so your results may vary.

I'm experimenting with the whole socks + SPD sandals thing this winter: Wool socks when it's dry, sealskinz when it's wet...
So far my coldest commute has been 35F and my feet were totally comfortable. We'll see if it continues to work out as it gets colder. I'm cautiously optimistic so far.

Hmm.. perhaps the snow sneakers would be light and warm enough. Trouble is, only Bean sells anything like them.

OK, after using the Snow Sneakers all of last winter. Here is my take on them. They turned out to be a good shoe for cold weather. The mesh above the toe does let in some cold air, but I put on the Performance Toesties over them and they solved that problem. I wore them down to 5f. That day I had two pair of socks, the 2nd pair was thick Merino Wool socks. The few times that I did wear them in rain thay kept my feet dry. The Bugabootoos look warm. But I question whether or not they'd fit in toeclips. And they are way heavier than the Snow Sneakers. For the $$ the Snow Sneakers are a good buy. And I'd purchase them again.

Here is an option that I think would work well for commuters who don't have a long ride. These are inexpensive and look they are are leather. Probably not real light so may not be recommended for long rides. 2 sizes over with really thick wool socks they would probably be warmer than the snow sneakers.

Here's another option. Inexpensive but not waterproof. Actually below freezing these more breathable shoes are often warmer. You can treat the leather parts with silicone to water proof them.
