Rust Protection : Vinyl tape over bare metal ?
Hi guys.
I was wondering if I could quickly fix a problem. I have a rather long section of exposed bare CrMo that's starting to rust now with the winter. I was wondering if instead of painting it (which would necessitate days of drying) I could simply clean out the rust and apply standard vinyl electrical tape instead.
Looks aren't an issue. This bike is as punk as it gets already !
I guess my real question is : will the vinyl tape be able to prevent rust and protect the metal ?

If not electrical tape, would duct tape do a better job ? i just need to stop the rust and can't afford to be w/o a ride even for a few days..

I would expect it to trap moisture and do the opposite of what you want. I'd sand it down to bare metal again, clean with alcohol, then "paint" it with colored nail polish, and use some kind of wax over that until you can touch it up properly.

i guess i'll just try multiple layers of electrical tape (that's what I have handy) in the mean time
it has got to be better than exposed, bare steel.
i'll try to report back. it is a temporary solution of course. it's just that I can't paint the bike right now. too much hassle/outside is wet/no space/no time.

seriously, i'm pretty sure 4-5 layers of electrical tape will be able to temporarily seal... anyway we have the harshest winter conditions here so it's going to be a ultimate test. yup i'm stubborn. my frame is like a lab for me though. it's not worth much anyway !

X1 on the electrical tape trapping moisture. Remove rust, wipe with alcohol, spray some rustoleum

Rustoleum will dry hard enough in a couple of hours , and you said looks don't matter anyway.

I'd give it a shot. I'd think that if you apply the tape correctly (i.e. put the proper tension on it), it'd seal up well. I've put it on cable rub spots in the past without painting and when I took it off months/hard winter miles later to properly touch it up with paint, the bare metal was still "pristine." Go for it and get back to us with the results. :-)

Just leave it. My winter bike is beat to hell with chips and scratches. It is so rusty it's laughable. I doubt it is going to fall apart. Ever.
If you want to tape it, rustoleum first and then apply tape before the paint dries. Bangin.
