On a related note, where does the "Spidel" labeled components fall into this discussion. Per my experience, the're pretty much the same as Maillard "Professionel" 700 grade, but maybe with a little bit better finish/polish. Wasn't Spidel a conglomeration of the different French brands (Mafac/Simplex/Maillard) to market/push their better or best grade components to the international market in the 80's as a group?

Correct. Include Stronglight in that conglomeration along with Pivo. And as someone else pointed out, you will find Maillard 700s labeled Peugeot Trophy. All the same hub for the most part. There was another player in the market. Pelissier. Some of their high end hubs are among the nicest ever.
