The key to redesigning the city to be bicycle and pedestrian friendly is so much more then just adding a bike lane and a sidewalk in a few places. It means doing major rethinking about the city in general.
1) You need to be able to live, work, shop and play within a small geographic area. A pedestrian city needs everything within a mile in any direction. A bicycle extends this to about 5 miles.
2) You need plentiful and secure bicycle parking.
3) You need to get rid of the idea that the most important part of any structure is the automobile parking.
Essentially the ideal pedestrian city needs to look more like a city from 1889 then a city from 1989.
And to further extend the distance one can travel, as well as for days with inclement weather a good well thought out public transit system needs to be put into place. As well as businesses going back to offering (I won't say free delivery) but delivery service.
That way a person can go out purchase large, bulky items and not have to worry about how they are going to get them home.
