I think 1/2" chains shouldn't be shunned over 3/8". I know it's less lateral flexibility and that means noisy, but that means I can keep it "less tight" without a danger of derailing. I like that. Traffic noise flood out the drive train noise anyway; so I am happy with it as long as it doesn't destroy itself. (and it hasn't done so)
