OTOH, if you insist, and it's legal to ride on the interstate and the road has a good wide shoulder, that's the route I would use.
If he waited a couple years, it might be feasible, since property values are on the decline. However, NM and Santa Fe in particular have been resistant to the national trends in real estate value, so it's not nearly the steep slope of, say, California.
