It doesn't really change my answer any but would possible give some insight as to why a driver thought they had the right to repeatedly honk their horn at you.
I favor courtesy in these situations. The courteous thing for the driver to have done would have been to wait patiently. The courteous thing for you to have done would have been to position yourself far enough to the LEFT so that cars can get by.
No the lane is only 1 car width wide, no shoulder. If a car is going straight and first in line, other traffic would have to wait for the green light.
My only thought about being all the way to the LEFT is that someone would come up beside me and want to go straight. Once the traffic behind us backs up, I am pretty much screwed trying to get back over. The traffic signal is very long, and backs up traffic probably about 10 car lengths during the red light.
