Bikes: 2006 Specialized Ruby Pro aka "Rhubarb" / and a backup road bike

Sometimes I move to the L side of the lane AND pull forwards towards the crosswalk and position my bike slightly diagonally towards the right. A driver will have enough room to make a R turn but not enough to drive straight past me to pass. As soon as the light turns green I take the center of the lane until I clear the intersection.

For a very narrow lane, I just take the lane and let the drivers honk all they want. They don't get any different privileges than they would if I was driving a car. You need to take control of the situation and not risk your safety just for their convenience.

Sometimes I'll wave drivers to go ahead and pass while I am curbside but it is always AFTER I have cleared an intersection and proceded towards mid-block and there are good breaks in traffic so I can easily get back into the lane without endangerment. Otherwise you can get stuck not making it through an intersection on green, or getting right-hooked, or having a car "not see you" while motionless. All unsafe.
