Lots of nice cyclocross bikes being abused off road with low spoke count racing wheels like Mavic Aksiums Race (including mine) without problem. Most quality hybrids will have wheels that are mostly up to the task.
These are my cross / winter wheels... with 36 spokes per wheel they are pretty bombproof.
I did not build these but have tuned them to perfection... they have also seen a lot of heavy duty use as I have towed as much as 300 pounds behind this bike.
A few bumps and roots are nothing compared to that.
