I have a couple of hills in which I use the 34/27 on the compact with ease. Doing the same hills with the triple- I have found the 39/27 is just a bit too tall so have to slip into the granny.

Depends how fit you are - I know- but I like the gearing on the compact and rarely would need the granny on a triple.
