If everybody just LOOKED up from their iPhones and payed attention behind the wheel, and on foot - regardless of right of way - this problem becomes smaller than it already is. I can't even believe that a couple of peds one way or the other is even news worthy as they all (in my town) seem to be on a suicide mission anyway.
I agree if everyone would pay attention and respect one other there would be no problem. Unfortnately not the reality here. My point isn't really to get rid of messengers. Only that, if we did no one would miss them. There is a reason there numbers are in decline. Their service hasn't evolved with the times and fewer and fewer businesses need them.

I believe the problem , from my DAILY trips to the city, is limited to a few small groups. I advocate licencing those groups and then taking it from there. I'm against mass registration. However, politicians being, well, not the smartest group, will act in non imaginative ways. Those on this board in Philly should give the politicians other ways to go. otherwise mass registration is going to happen.
