Are you sure that is a crack and not just where the weld (a poor one) runs out at the tube? Carefully mark it and see if it progresses (gets longer). If it is a crack and the cause of the creaking you should see the crack grow fairly quickly and the advice given here followed. If no growth, it is just a cosmetic issue with the weld and you are good. You still have the creaking to solve.
