No they are not.
They are essential to getting a shift adjust as best as possible. The more gears on the rear cog, the more essential the barrel adjuster is. And to answer the OP's question, one barrel adjuster is enough.
Thanks that is what I was hoping, I did not want to resort to old school style and adjusting the cable manually!
