We're not talking about wailing on it with a 9 lb sledge.

I've had to do the whole "hit the wrench with a hammer" thing to loosen a 3T stem like that. It was one of the ones where the stem is split at the bottom and the "nut" end is a cone that goes up the middle and expands the split. I think you actually HAVE TO pound the cone back out - feature, not bug.
