LarDasse74 (haha): The bike fell off the MTA bus rack in the front of the bus at Hollywood and Vine. The spring in the rack's clampdown arm that goes over the front wheel failed. The driver stopped before it went completely under the bus but it got jammed up under the rack pretty well. Funny thing was that the chainstay cracks weren't initially visible to me even though I checked the frame out pretty carefully. The inner dent tells me that's where the impact was but the rear wheel flexed right back to true and I never knew it had damaged the inside of the stay. I thought the only thing that was damaged was the front derailleur so I fixed that and kept riding for another 4 months. I hit a pothole so hard last week that I broke a spoke and took the bike in to have a new one threaded. That's when they spotted the cracks. They'd already had the bike twice since the bus deal and not spotted anything amiss either time so I'm guessing the cracks kept growing from their start on the inside of the stay.
cyccommute: it's a different EV3 than the one you're looking at. Mine's
here. All alu except the fork.
Mr IGH: I like your style but I'm not only still amazed that it hasn't broken under me yet, I also don't want to have to buy a new wheel, derailleur or chainrings when it does completely separate with 235 lbs on it going 45 mph. Plus I don't like pain. I know, I know, that's the problem with cycling these days, buncha pansies huh.
Thanks all for your input, I'm really impressed with this forum. Now I'm shopping for another used frame. Xmas present like Yo! said.
