If I were in the market for a new JIS square-taper bottom bracket, I'd probably just get the Shimano UN-5X (I think it's at UN-54 now). It's the highest-ranked model that Shimano makes and it's totally fine. But maybe the CrankCase is lighter.
I've also used Nashbar-branded square-taper bottom brackets (produced by RPM) and haven't had any problem with them either.
I have one of those shimano BB they are a brick, and they use plastic cups.
