I used them for about 15 years, and only came off the first time I had them, only because I forgot.
Anyone who thinks straps are any more than 114.3% more dangerous than clipless, never learnt how to use them properly.
If used correctly, they are not significantly more dangerous than clipless.
Odd, but I agree. I rarely used clips-and-straps anymore (except on a tandem I have), but after the first two times I came off with them, I haven't forgotten the back and out movement. I used plastic pedals and clips-and-straps for quite a long time before being able to AFFORD to go to clipless.
I've been considering them for an upcoming soujourn because I may need work boots which don't take kindly to clipless.
