I'm not really big on convention so I see nothing wrong with a 100% period correct '68 Paramount sporting Aero Brake levers (esp. the early campy aero levers). Brifters, on the other hand, are ugly...so I'd have a problem if that were the case.

700C wheels also pass the test. Looks good and Works Well...so i'd have very few qualms putting 700c wheels (with period hubs) on a '53 Hetchins Magnum Opus.

Then again, my bikes are for riding primarily, and admiring only when they're not being ridden


All that said...if you asked me "Do you get a small bit of elitist self-satisfaction from building & riding a 100% showroom spec Vintage bike?" my answer would be "Yeah, a little"

That is SO well put.

If I had a generous budget to put together a period-correct bike, I would get a LOT of satisfaction from doing it.
