A nine speed chain is a smaller, narrower, weaker chain. I agree that a 8sp chain will be stronger. I like that a 9sp chain usually results in a quieter drive train. I replace my chain often so I am not so worried about the strength. I have never had an issue using a SRAM master link either. Until I start having problem's, I will stick with this set up. That an a SRAM PC-951 is cheap. Cheap to replace. I like it.
