I was carfree until age 26. I then decided to move to the country and build a house. Although I managed a couple of long stints without a vehicle, I quickly came to the conclusion that I needed some way to get back to the city to purchase things like granola and good coffee.
My own conclusion is this: it's easier to be carfree in the city. I suppose it could happen in the woods, but you'd need to plan very carefully for it.
