Ramped Chainring/ chain Length Question?

Trying to replace the large ring on Mtn bike triple,
by the use of the word ramp, I assume that is the bump-bevel
that sits on the inside of the ring just below the
teeth, which I understand is beneficial in down shifting,
is this critical? (the bike has ramped rings), or would a flat chainring do?
I have index shifting, which I've read uses ramped
rings, also what does a 'pinned 'ring mean?
do I need to add a link of chain going up to
50 t from a 48 t ring?
thanks for your time and info
