I was just giving you a hard time, but I have found the following to be the best for chromo Speedplays - I brush them on a wire wheel on my bench grinder and then seal them with automotive clearcoat from a touchup bottle. do it in about 4-5 coats and the surface will be hard enough to help prevent it from scratching as easily.

To lube just remove the screw from the end of the spindle (outside of the pedal body). Get one of those small syringes that almost anyone with a baby will have from dosing oral medication, and fill it with grease. Stick it in the end and push hard against it as you rotate the pedal body. Stop when all the grease coming out the other side of the pedal body is "clean".
