The dimples they are referring to are different than the screw hole you are showing. Those are X series, not Zero series pedals. For a set of things as mechanically simple as their pedals, the folks at Speedplay sure do a good job of preventing them from being compatible with each other (zeros and LA for example). Also, being a tri-bike the comment about disinfecting may not have had anything to do with making the outside of the bike look pretty. When it comes to longer races there aren't usually organized breaks in tri's the way there are in many road races.
