I play a fun little mathematical game.

When someone places three top bids in a row to discourage other bidders... I bid them up incrementally until I am one penny below their bid.
Then they usually put two more bids in and I come back bidding slowly, but this time expecting that they have changed their bidding pattern.

I make sure to strategically bid so that the automatic bid increases will be just below what I think the other guy's top bid is. I end up making a whole lot of money for the seller.
