1983 Peugeot PX8M Before & After

I picked up this nice Peugeot last week on Craigslist for $65. The guy I bought it from had gotten it for himelf, but it was too big for him. There was only a grainy small pic in the ad, so I was happy when I showed up and found it to be in really great shape. I've had some fun trying to build it up to suit my needs as cheaply as possible. I payed $65 for it. Pretty good deal in my book!

I thought I'd share the fun:

So this is the bike as purchased. It's a bit large for me at 61cm, but I figured it's an upright style so I could bring the saddle down quite a bit:

This is the only information I could find on the internet for this model: I guess it wasn't brought to the states enough to be in the US catalogues: This ad is from 1984, mine is a 1983 according to the sticker on the chainstay.

Interestingly, it seems the guy who bought this bike chose the porteur style bars instead of the drop bars. Great for me!

Now this original owner had also removed the front derailleur at some point. Not sure why, but as luck would have it, the front downtube shifter is a clamp on! I figured a 1x5 drive would provide plenty of gear choices and a cheap fix:
