Well, it's a bit more complicated. The DS has it's own torsional stiffness, as does the NDS. However, torque must also pass through the hub body to get to the NDS, which may be stiff (wide body) or may not be. Formulas are provided in the back of Jobst Brandt's book. They are basic stiffness equations. In his example, a 36 spoke wheel was found to have only 13% of the torque transferred to the NDS. Unless you have a very stout hub body (powertap), or exotic lacing patterns, you should expect much more torque being tranferred throught he DS than the NDS.

1x? It is on the list of OK configurations from DT Swiss. Not conventional, I admit, but neither is it so silly as to be seen as completely wrong from the get-go. Lots of discussion about various combinations with an experienced wheel builder before going this way. Some production wheels are built with radial DS, so the idea isn't that crazy, but DT Swiss say no for their hubs.

Heads in? Purpose was to gain a bit of a wider angle (less dish) compared to heads out or mix in/out.

For those of you who are purists , the new wheels I'm getting built up will be a very traditional 3x both sides on the rear wheel and 3x on the front.

If I do get a replacement hub and build up this wheel again, I suspect I will go 3x just to eliminate a variable - however, this does not alter my opinion that the hub should not have failed due to the lacing pattern.
I'm am surely not a purist. I've seen plently of NDS laced with less crosses, or even radial. And yes, a select few manufacturers are even making the DS radial. There's probably some catchy reason for it. In the end, they just want your money.

I just raised the question - for a 32 spoke wheel, what is so wrong with 3x? The 1x DS seems to me a solution to a problem that does not exist... and may be the reason your flange snapped.

You mention 1x is approved with DT, but I wonder if they have 1x with all heads in in mind. I'm not sure. Good luck - I'm interested in what DT has to say.
