Bikes: Schwinn S25 "department store crap" FS MTB, home-made CF 26" hybrid, CF road bike with straight bar, various wierd frankenbikes

The closer the derailleur is to the chain rings the more positive the shifting. Move it down until it rubs and back it off to minimal clearance. This can make a BIG difference.
