I am a big fan of repurposing old rigid MTBs. Its a platform that you can build into most anything short of a road racer. Towny, utility, trail rider, snow bike, tourer, campus bike, commuter, trailer puller, ersatz CX, anything. Putting slicks on one completely transforms it into a different animal.
I have never ridden Fat Franks, but I am certainly a fan of Big Apples. They are heavy, but they roll like a dream.

p.s., anyone who jumps curbs with their kid on board is my kind of person.
