To pile on a little bit more, go for it! Especially with a flat commute, that should do you quite nicely, and any tires or simple repairs are cheap.

Who knows, maybe the vintage style will help turn you to the dark side of C&V bikes rather than modern hybrids... you can find things that are quite functional and considerably less expensive than modern bikes when the time comes to get a "nicer" bike.
