Hah, funny that you're in Boulder and from Albany... I'm in Denver, but from Albany-ish.

Anyway, I've had (factory installed) car thermometers for almost 15 years now and rarely find them to be accurate -- fairly accurate when the sun doesn't shine (like in bleak Albany), but not so much when the sun does shine (like in sunny CO).
