If you're just cruising around the neighborhood, weight doesn't matter so much. If you're out trying to better your own personal limit for performance (average speed, distance, ascent, whatever) then weight becomes more of a factor. I own a light (17lb), extremely expensive road bike and a heavy (23lb) relatively cheap touring bike. Both are tons of fun... in the right situation.
