To add resistance, one must add a fan or flywheel. A fluid trainer with a flywheel simulates the road better and will offer a better workout over the entire spectrum of power / heart rate levels. I currently use a 1upUSA trainer, and it's great for isolation type drills (i.e. "grinders", sustained or interval efforts in Z3 or >, etc.) as resistance is linear, and can be adjusted fairly easily to a higher base resistance as a starting point. . I really felt like the rollers made me concentrate on form and balance. I rode rollers that were 3.25 in. diameter, see that Kreitlers come in 4.5, 3.00 and 2.5. I'd guess 3" would be best for me, as the 3.25 I rode (not Kreitlers) were fairly easy to spin, and sounds like 2.5's would be a bit much.
