Basic color theory. It has nothing to do with thickness, as long as the garment is skin tight. The lighter the color, the easier it is to see contours because it's shadows that make the variances noticeable. Of course, that means dark red isn't as bad as light red, but both aren't as concealing as black.
I've had this conversation with my wife before, and she agrees that a pattern would also hide the contours, so I don't know why they insist on keeping the crotch panels solid. The Carrera team never had this problem.
