Basic color theory. It has nothing to do with thickness, as long as the garment is skin tight. The lighter the color, the easier it is to see contours because it's shadows that make the variances noticeable. Of course, that means dark red isn't as bad as light red, but both aren't as concealing as black.
I have some very nice Castelli Free bibs that have a white middle panel... Totally opaque but still obscene due to the contour-effect mentioned above...
