I'll tell you what, I did pretty much nothing but SST training last fall, and came out and completly dominated my first Cat 3 crit of the season in January with my only intensity being test stuff more than training stuff (to get used to the sensation of a kilo effort, for instance).
I didn't really have the option to do too much intensity as my broken collar bone had set my training back a month, so I focused on tempo and SST. I went into the Fall with an FTP around 325W, and at then end of January, I was at 360W (169 lbs), and had MAP tested 500W.
