Depending on the type of pad and the conditions one sees, you may have to replace brake pads every 2000 miles.

Kool Stop pads are great but they do wear rather quickly which is a good thing as this means the pad is wearing and not the rim... the last set I replaced probably had 3000 miles on them which would mean I will go through 5 sets of pads before the rim wears out. These brakes were on my long bike which does some serious hauling and towing and sees some horrid weather so the brakes get some extreme use.

My experience with Tektro pads has not been great from a wear standpoint... the braking is good but they are harder and extremely abrasive and significantly reduce rim life. Since Tektros are a popular stock brake many bikes are usng these and when they roll into my shop the first thing we do is replace them with Kool Stops.

The braking improves and I know the rims will last longer.
