OK Donald, your question made me check out the 500 manual on the Garmin site. It says the following, same as for the 305:
In the Wheel Size field, select an option:
• Select Auto to calculate your wheel size using GPS distance.
• Select Custom to enter your wheel size.
I see it's still written in that annoyingly vague way that doesn't quite tell you what you need, but from the way they describe the pairing with the GSC10, is *sounds* as though it should be taking speed readings from the unit (although they don't explicitly say so).
The 305 manual has this telltale phrase that wasn't in the 500 version "The speed data from the GSC10 is only recorded and used for distance calculation when the GPS signal is weak or GPS is turned off." Grrr.
