If you have a hardtail then use a standard fender and there won't be a problem with rack clearance. Or, what I did: I chopped off the MTB fender, the kind that attached to the seatpost, and attached it under the rack with zip ties. Sorry, I still don't have pictures of it, it's still work in progress. I'm actually getting standard fenders for it this week.
I hope to be able to do a week or two-week ride around NY State. I'm rather conservative about my abilities so I figure 50 miles a day, not more than that. I've done 40 mile rides on full susp MTB with knobby tires, so this should be within my abilities
I like 26" MTBs because they're more standard, not sure in EU, and 29'ers just look weird to me

I had a Jamis Dakar full susp, it was a nice bike, lasted 7 years with minimum maintainance and no problems. I took it apart recently and sold the frame. The buyer is very happy with it and I used the components to build my current hardtail commuter. IMHO Jamis is OK.
