Comparing open pros to cxp33's keep in mind that the open pros have eyelets around the spoke nipples preventing the nipple from pulling though and breaking the rim. I never had cxp33's so I don't know if it happens to them.
the amount of wheel/rim deflection is negligible when compared to the amount of deflection the tire and fork will do. If your friend's wheels felt harsh, it was probably the tire on his wheels, or your wheels are severely under-tensioned.
