1. I don't live near the ocean.
2. I don't store my bikes out doors in the weather.
3. I've never used any kind of protection on the insides of my bicycle frame tubes. I own a 20 year old steel frame bicycle that shows no signs of interior rust.
So that's the standard of comparison: 20 years (and counting) of nothing. I suppose "Frame Saver" or fogging oil or linseed oil may be beneficial, but at 67, I probably won't live long enough to complete an adequate test.
Retro Grouch, I kind of want to argue with you (for fun) but I find myself in agreement too often to do so.
I haven't lived long enough yet to gain sage-like wisdom, but I also follow your 3 rules and haven't had any problems with rust. That said, I used boiled linseed oil in my surly when I got it - but I fully realize that it probably isn't making any difference in any way.
BTW - I grew up in the Lake of the Ozarks area (madness now) and went to school in Springfield.
