One thing I learned while working on my vintage Davidson (you should know them from Seattle) is that you don't have to worry about weight, and you don't need top $$$ equipment. The gear sold now is so much better than what was available when the Davidson was new that it all feels better. I put Tektro brakes and levers on it, really inexpensive well made stuff, and the bike actually stops now, and I can modulate it too. 9 or 10sp wheels are so much better than the old 6 speed freewheels, and even heavier modern wheels are lighter than the old ones. 10sp shifts better with downtube shifters than any 6 speed ever did.
