As to the original question. One good indicator for me of being in the red zone of bicycle excess is tire wear. If I wear my tires out on the road from regular use, that's a great feeling. On the other hand, if my tire treads show minimal use yet they are riddled with cracks and the sidewalls are falling apart, well this is not something that makes be beam with pride.
