Got my wheels from Velomine last night. Shipping was fast and no one else even came close to the price. I ordered the Pewter Origin 8 track pros for only $200 stinking dollars. They are heavy but otherwise close to what I would have wanted for a custom wheelset, but half the price as a custom.
Only one complaint...he offered to respace the rear hub, but then didn't do it. This is not a big deal to me since I have the spacers, the tools, and the know-how to do it myself, but might be a big PITA for someone else.
If anybody's listening...how realistic would it be to offer a budget FGSS wheelset that are not typical 32 spoke tank wheels, but more oriented toward road riding, which is what most people use their fixies for anyway. It drives me nuts when people lace quality hubs (like DA hubs) to good rims (like deep Vs or OPs) with ****ty straight gauge spokes.
How about a low-cost prebuilt wheelset with a 24-28 hole formula road hub (with bolt-on skewer), a 28-32 hole formula rear track hub, laced to the same variety of rims (deep Vs, OPs, CXP22s, etc.) with decent DOUBLE BUTTED spokes. A wheelset like that would be a few hundred grams lighter, more durable, more aero, and could probably still be sold for only a slightly higher pricepoint.
Edit added 2/1/10: Apparently Ben realized he didn't respace the wheel, and he contacted me about it. Theres appears to have been a communication mixup. Like I said above, not a big deal.
