Bikes: 1999 Steelman SR525, 2002 Lightspeed Ultimate, 1988 Trek 830, 2008 Scott Addict

I had the same budget and had been looking at the same frameset last year. My buddy got the SL2 and I got the Scott CR-1. I've been on the tarmac. Great bike. CR-1 is a great bike, a great deal and similar in geometry. Everyone who rides it says that they are suprised at the ride quality.

Good luck looking, shopping is fun.
