I commute with a Trek 1000 and it is great for that purpose. I keep clothes to change into at work and I have a good workout both directions. I ride 10 to 13 in and either 5 or 12 home depending on the routes I take. I also live in the South so I don't need to deal with snow. Unless you really like a mountain bike why would you ever want to ride one on paved roads?
