I'm with you on the gloves problem. I've tried gloves, mittens, layered and otherwise. But since I got covers to put over my handle bars that my hands slide into I've been fine. They keep the wind off your hands and wrists. I still need gloves, by the way, especially when it gets really cold, as the covers don't warm anything, they just protect you from the elements. When it gets too warm for the handle bar covers, they come off easily enough (at least mine do and I assume the others would too).
The ones I got are Moose Mitts. A more generic name is pogies and I've heard them called hand farings as well.
