I'm proponent of riding outdoors, but this assertion about racing is just false. I know plenty of serious racers (including one on my team who has won the NY City Spring Series the past couple of years) who do most of their training this time of year on the rollers. I think it's arguable that training indoors can be more effective than battling the cold in Jan/Feb. But to each his own, and I ride for reasons other than training, so getting outside daily is part of my routine 12 months a year.
Did you ride today? A bit nippy but not too bad up to Fort Lee, and crossing the bridge was really cool since the water close to the shore of both NY and NJ were frozen; I would have taken a pic but I was late for work as it was. The ride south wasn't as fun because the cold headwind just sucked the fun out of the ride.
